The Art of Giving

FOOD DONATIONS/KOHA

As part of our acknowledgement of "MATARIKI 2016" we asked whanau to donate non-perishable grocery items to our Koha boxes.  We decided to deliver our Koha to the Glen Innes Food bank which has been operating for 25 years in Glen Innes.  We were fortunate to meet the wonderful people at Citizens advice Bureau who were so grateful to receive our Koha boxes. We took three children from Apii Potiki to help deliver our koha.  Thank you to our whanau and our Apii Potiki family who have helped to make the donations.  Its a wonderful feeling to know that we who live in this community are doing our part to help our community.  Thank You to Tare and Millie for helping out today, and Thank You to our Tamariki who helped deliver our koha.  Meitaki Maata

Matariki Celebrations

When Mr Sean from Glen Innes Primary School invited us to celebrate Matariki, we happily accepted, and worked alongside him to plan some hands on experiences for our tamariki.
With inviting stations and tamariki eager to participate, our 2 hour morning started with an introduction, and a short movie about Matariki.
As our tamariki proceeded to paint their rocks, we had a little korero (talk) about our stones being provided to us by Papatuanuku (Maori God of the earth).
The star shaped cookie station was hilarious! Many tamariki were seen to be doing the sneaky taste tests before they placed their stars onto the baking trays.
Positive interactions, and group participation could be seen throughout the morning.
Meitaki maata (thank you) to Mr Sean and his team for asking us along to join in this Significant Maori celebration with the junior school. We can't wait for next year!

Our visit to Aoga ale Teuila

Celebrating Samoan Language Week

Our children were very fortunate to be invited to Aoga ale Teuila to celebrate Samoan Language Week with them. There were cultural activities set up for us to participate in like learning how to scrape taro using the top lid of the coconut cream, peeling the green bananas using a stick, and also weaving.

We also played a traditional game where children had to throw their small rock and get it closer to the big rock at the end of the mat. There were also performances shared between both centres and Aoga ale Teuila also showed us the well known story of 'Sina and the Tuna.'

Our children also got to share a meal with Aoga ale Teuila which consisted of the delicious Samoan food - pork, green bananas, taro and chop suey. Our children definitely enjoyed their meals as they were asking for second and third helpings. Yuuum!

Faafetai lava to the Aoga ale Teuila Preschool for allowing us to share this special celebration with you. We definitely had a good time playing and learning about your culture.
