Big Trucks have Big Wheels

On-going construction across the road from our Apii has been influential in provoking children's curiosities in transport.

Tamariki share thoughts and ideas about different types of vehicles..."That's a Mixer Truck!"..."Like a bus"..."It's got dirt inside"
(Communication & Contribution)

Inorganic week in our community provided another opportunity for our tamariki to observe large vehicles in action, as well as discuss concepts of recycling.

"Both indoor and outdoor environments, including the neighbourhood, should be used as learning resources"

(Te Whariki - Exploration p83).

One man's junk, is another man's treasure!

What can we do with these old tyres which someone left outside our Apii?
"Maybe they came off those big trucks?" said one child. "Yea, I think so, it's got big wheels...like this one", said another
(Thinking & Reasoning - Active Exploration).

"Let's race! Mine is faster than yours..."

It did not take long for some of our older tamariki to discover ways of using the old tyres.

"Developing the knowledge that playing with ideas and materials, with no objective in mind, can be enjoyable, creative, and valid approach to learning"
(Exploration Goal 1).

On a daily basis, we can hear and see many different kinds of vehicles from standing on top of our slide tower. It is quite noticeable how structural changes within our local community are playing a big part in encouraging an on-going interest in transport and construction for our tamariki.

To extend on this interest we are currently planning a centre excursion to
M.O.T.A.T

"Adults should plan activities, resources, and events which build upon and extend children's interests"
(Te Whariki - Exploration p83).

Cars - transport

Today we talked about how cars are made.
We painted old bottles, which we will be using for the bodies of our cars.
We can't wait for tomorrow when our first part of our cars are dry. We have planned to use more recyclable to make our wheels, doors and windows. We have also been discussing a lot about our trip to M.O.T.A.T next week. We are sure there will be some cars at M.O.T.A.T like the ones we are building.

Our little Bakers in the making!!

Our tamariki watching Deziah stir the cupcake mixture.. Good looking eyes!

That looks very delicious Primrose & Emery.. Mmmm!

Pita looking very focussed on Deziah's stirring.

Look at the outcome of our baking. Fruit salad cupcakes made by our babies.
Definitely tastes better than what it looks like :)
